Game Over, the Tobacco Industry has Won
This past January, right around the time when Canada’s tobacco settlement was being finalized, our country held its sadly necessary 49th annual aspirationally-named National Non-Smoking Week. TIME FOR CANADA'S FIRST SMOKE-FREE GENERATION
Lost amid last month’s frenzied news regarding the latest COVID variant was a landmark announcement by the government of New Zealand of a bold new countermeasure aimed at the eventual eradication of an even greater killer: tobacco. Cigarette butts are by far Canada's leading form of litter. Worldwide, trillions are littered annually. Beyond being unsightly, non-biodegradable and toxic to marine and terrestrial life, they are costly to clean up, and a leading cause of both structure and forest fires. Although increasingly getting the attention that they deserve as an environmental concern, little thought has been given to them in the context of Canada's recently-proposed single-use plastics ban.

Opinion: Princess Leia ultimately killed by the real Darth Vader / Evil Empire
Movies are one of the main legal avenues remaining for the industry to (indirectly) market to children.
Numerous studies have shown that smoking in movies makes teens more likely to try smoking. In fact, a review study suggested that as much as 37 per cent of youth smoking initiation is due to smoking in movies. The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that this is causal, and that simple ratings changes could reduce the number of teen smokers by nearly one in five (18 per cen
